With cash becoming increasingly difficult to come by, Econet through its mobile money platform EcoCash has taken measures to make mobile payments more available. Having recently acquired deals for Electricity and Water bills through Ecocash, the mobile giant has also brought back paying for kombi fare through the Ecocash platform. This development has come as a welcome move by many Ecocash customers whom can now avoid long queues to get cash and purchase electricity coupons. On their Twitter page, Ecocash laid out the instructions as to how one can go about purchasing their electricity tokens. Although clarity hasn’t been given on how to go about paying water bills, council rates and kombi fare, Ecocash has announced that this will be possible in their latest advert which is currently making circuits on radio.
With Ecocash having posted a 13% revenue growth, these new moves are set to only increase the mobile money platform’s earnings. Netone’s One Wallet, which previously had a monopoly on the purchasing of zesa tokens via mobile money, might be dealt a major blow with Ecocash’s move onto the same platform. Given the efficiency of Ecocash’s DSTV payment platform, there is no doubt that the Zesa token, Water bills and Council Rate platforms will be a success too.
