The Africa Cup of Nations 2017 edition kicks off in Gabon on Saturday the 14th of January. Zimbabweans across the world will be looking forward to seeing the Warriors in action at the 31st edition of the tournament. The Warriors are in Group B with Algeria, Senegal and Tunisia. Although it may appear as if the Warriors are the underdogs in their group, it may not be an accurate assertion. Algeria and Tunisia have largely fallen from their status as African giants and the Warriors currently have one of the strongest squads they’ve ever possessed. The Warriors are largely expected to be within contention for qualification to the next round with the likes of Khama Billiat, Knowledge Musona and Costa Nhamoinesu expected to help the squad with their ability and experience. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande, who is the Warriors captain, will be expected to dictate things in the centre of the park. In their group, the Warriors will face African footballer of the year Riyad Mahrez of Algeria and 3rd placed Sadio Mane of Senegal. The Warriors will play their 1st game on Sunday the 15th at 18:00 against The Dessert Warriors of Algeria.
The tournament’s first game will kick off at 18:00 CAT and will see hosts Gabon face off with Guinea-Bissau. The tournament will see 16 teams from across the continent battle it out for the coveted title of African champions. The Elephants of Ivory Coast are the current title holders and will be looking to retain the title as they go into this year’s edition. They won the 2015 edition after beating Ghana 8-9 in a penalty shoot out. Vast talent will be on show at the tournament with players coming from all parts of the world where they ply their trade. The final of the 2017 Africa Cup Of Nations will be played on the 5th of February.
