Investors of Cannabis growers for medical purposes are to partner with the government in a project. The Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, and Rural, Vangelis Haritatos revealed.

Zimbabwe started the process of licensing the growing of cannabis last year in the hope of retaining profits from the conditionally legalized plant.

“… because of the security element (in the growing of cannabis), we said that you have to partner with the government,” Haritatos said.

The investor will contribute 60 percent while the government will have the other 40 percent in the partnership according to the Deputy Minister.

The Deputy Minister also said the growing cannabis, which can also be illegally used for recreative processes in Zimbabwe has very strict requirements.

“For one it has to be grown under greenhouse and for two it has to be in a very secure environment,” Haritatos explained. (sic)

“It’s not just something that you can grow in your background. Therefore that is why it’s taking us quite a long time as government really look into policy.”

Zimbabwe becomes the second country in Africa to legalize cannabis after Lesotho.

The government has already licensed 37 investors, who are still under security check, to grow cannabis in Zimbabwe.

The cannabis license costs US$50 thousands and the selected investors have already paid US$10 thousand in advance.
