Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) says it has intensified revenue collection efforts in order to recover the $1.2 billion debt that is locked in defaulting consumers to enable the power utility to enhance service delivery.
The exercise will focus primarily on customer categories which include commercial, mining, agriculture and domestic.
“In the interest of quality service provision, ZETDC is implementing its full complement of credit control measures to defaulters who did not make an effort to clear their debts, or engage the power utility for payment plans.” the company’s Public Relations says.
“The revenue being realised from paying your bill is being utilised to pay for electricity imports, coal for local generation and buy spares for network maintenance, as well as other critical inputs for security of electricity supply.”
The power utility is on record stating that it is taking various measures that include blacklisting, installing prepayment meters for domestic consumers and small institutions and installation of smart meters for medium and large power users that consume 100 amps and above.
The parastatal is also resorting to disconnections and litigation against such defaulters to recover the revenue that is locked with the debtors
