Industry and Commerce Minister Sekai Nzenza has appointed Dr. Farai Karonga as acting Chief Executive Officer for the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel (ZISCO) Pvt Ltd.

Karonga replaces Alois Gowo who retired during the beginning of this year.

The Acting CEO has served for institutions which include RioZim, as Acting General Manager for the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) and the University of Zimbabwe.

Karonga is also appointed at a time when the government is working to resuscitate ZISCO, which was once Zimbabwe’s largest steel producer.

Besides Karonga, the government also appointed additional board members to ZISCO, which include Martin Manhuwa, Demand Gwatinetsa and Edmore Tafirenyika.

The three join an interim board of five members led by Professor Gift Mugano.

Other members of the board include Mrs C. Zhanje, Ms M. Buzuzi, Mr M. Phiri and Ms S. Sidambe.

The five members who are already in the board were appointed by former Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu last year.

Current Industry and Commerce Minister expressed confidence that Board Members and the CEO’s technical expertise will help lead the ZISCO Steel strategic direction and revive a vibrant national steel industry.

Nzenza also said, “The resuscitation of ZISCO Steel remains of paramount importance considering the parastatal’s pivotal role in the mining and manufacturing sector. In view of that, the Minister is focused on best practice and good corporate governance and has, therefore, included a diversity of skills to contribute to the strategic direction and transformation of ZISCO Steel into a formidable player in the Mining Sector.”
