The United States Embassy, on Tuesday, issued a security alert to American citizens updating on street closures and potential civil unrest and violence in Zimbabwe as political parties fight for the State House in the Constitutional Court.
The Embassy says US citizens should stay away from roads sealed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Commercial Business District as the constitutional court hearing proceeds in Harare.
“Zimbabwe is experiencing civil unrest, violence, and heightened political tension following the general elections held on July 30, 2018,” reads the alert. “The security situation remains volatile.”
“On August 22, the Constitutional Court will begin hearing the election challenge filed by Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).”
The Constitutional Court hearing following the Movement For Democratic Change Alliance (MDC Alliance) application against started yesterday being broadcasted live on Zimbabwe’s local television broadcast known as the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.
Zimbabwe’s first ever broadcasted court case will decide whether there will be any changes in the African country’s top Presidential post or not.
On high alert of violence the ZRP sealed roads which include Sam Nujoma-Simon Muzenda, Sam Nujoma-Kwame Nkrumar-Simon Muzenda, Sam Nujoma-Samora Machel-Simon Muzenda and Sam Nujoma-Nelson Mandela-Simon Muzenda.
Zimbabwe witnessed post-elections violence in the streets of Harare last week resulting in the death of at least three people as the military intervened.
Although the Harare Embassy is issuing a security alert the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has been assuring tourists that Zimbabwe is a safe destination.
The Authority has been stating that all tourist destinations are safe for travellers.
